To enter the Savoy Theatre is to step back In time. It was built by MacSween Contractors for its owner, John Connors, in the nineteen-twenties, to the specifications of the famed Victorian show houses. In keeping with the times, live performances of every description including boxing matches, were staged here in the early days. In its first fifty years, the Savoy provided the setting for a host of local performers and theatrical productions, and for thousands of visiting stars.
Its history is steeped with the performances of this century's greatest talents from Cape Breton Island, as well as a plethora of renowned regional, national, and international artists. Audiences and artists alike have praised the Savoy for its elegant, inviting atmosphere and its rich acoustics. A performance at the Savoy is deemed to be much more than simply attending a show; it is considered to be an enjoyable and unique experience.
The mandate of the Savoy is to provide quality cultural programming to the Cape Breton Island community and its visitors. In a typical year, the Savoy will play host to approximately one hundred performances that may vary from children's theatre, to rock concerts, to ballet.
Programming at the Savoy has always been a welcome challenge for our staff. Not only do we hope to deliver performances that are popular with patrons; we want to promote the unknown gems, support local artists and foster the newest creations in the entertainment world.
Through the creation of the Savoy's summer signature show and an annual children's production, we were afforded the opportunity to work with local talent and introduce the Savoy in her new role as Producer.
It's been an extraordinary process of growing and changing for the seventy-six year old entertainment venue, especially in recent years as The Savoy received recognition by various levels of government as a substantial component of Cape Breton's entertainment and cultural infrastructure. This recognition led to an investment in the 1998 expansion of the theatre to include a larger lobby and studio space, improved food and beverage facilities, and administration offices.
