MacDonald House Museum

MacDonald House Museum consists of a restored 1850's house, display barns, a country schoolhouse, a fine collection of early 1900's furniture and artifacts, displays of old farm machinery and implements hand woven displays and much more.

The house boasts an impressive, steeply pitched roof with gingerbread trim, above the front entrance. These features are typical of the 'Gothic Revival' style, common in Cape Breton in the mid 1800's.

Glenmore School was moved here from its original location at Twin Rock Valley. The school was built in 1921 by Angus MacKay and Malcolm Archie MacMillan. Restored by the Lake Ainslie Historical Society, it now depicts a typical, rural, one room school house. At various times during the summer months we present reenactments of ' A Day in the Life of a One-room School'.

Our Display Barn contains wagons, sleighs, carts and other items used by farmers in the area. See a thrashing machine used to prepare the grain for the farm.

We have a growing collection of books and records pertaining to families and history of the local area. Visitors are welcome to use our resources with the assistance of staff or a Society member. We have walking trails, you may see eagles and children are very welcome.
