The Coastal Discovery Centre is a community, social and enterprise centre housed in the former elementary school in Main-à-Dieu. Its purpose is to provide:
- home for local businesses and entrepreneurs, serving both residents and visitors, with a special focus on establishing the site as a major tourist attraction on the Marconi Trial.
- A venue for social and leisure activities, including fundraising events designed to support and develop the CDC project.
The Visitor Info Centre provides brochures about tourist attractions, visitor maps, and other information about the area. We also have a gift shop where visitors can purchase souvenirs of the area. All proceeds go towards the operation of the Coastal Discovery Centre.
The Fishermen's Museum is dedicated to the promotion of local history and the ongoing livelihood of the community. Nearly 35,000 tourists have visited the area since its opening on May 15, 1994. Coordinated by Sandy Evans (Main-à-Dieu), this venture was made possible through the previous fisheries adjustment package and initiated with financial assistance from the Fisheries Restructuring Adjustment Measures, Canada Opportunities Agency, Human Resources Department and Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation. The museum continues to be operated by the Main-à-Dieu and Area Community Development Association.
