New Waterford Consolidated opened in 1963. For several years the Sisters of St. Martha operated the hospital. In 1995, it joined the Cape Breton Healthcare Complex.

The hospital contains both acute and continuing care units. Its 21-bed continuing care unit opened in 1999 and has been expanded to 24 beds.
New Waterford Consolidated also has offices for Home Care Nova Scotia, Public Health Services and a residence for the Sisters of St. Martha.
