The current Candleriggs is the fourth edition of an enterprise to occupy the building since 1857. In that year, the Shatford family of Indian Harbour opened a general store providing a vital community service. They expanded in 1877 and by the mid 1930's added a White Rose gas service station. The upper floor of this building was used for the construction of small boats and fishing dories for the fisherman. The business continued as a general store and gas station until purchased in 1973 by Jean Cochrane and renamed the Candleriggs, taking its name from the oldest paved cobblestone street in Glasgow, Scotland.

Created as a showcase for fine arts and crafts, the shop has earned a widely acclaimed reputation as a source of quality Nova Scotian and Canadian handcrafts. In 1982, while maintaining the rural Nova Scotian architectural heritage, major renovations were undertaken to expand the shop and to include a dinning room, which since has earned a reputation for fine food and excellent service.

In mid 2005, Jean retired and sold the business to Pat and John Gaudet who have been residing in Bedford, NS for the past 15 years. Pat and John would like continue to offer their warm and friendly service as well as to bring a down home charm and comfortable atmosphere to visitors and locals alike. They are committed in maintaining the widely acclaimed reputation and are looking forward on seeing you.
