I started carving wood when I moved to Seabright in 1971. My interest in the works of Henry Moore is reflected in some of the early large wood pieces. Later, I incorporated smooth beach stones into some of the wood sculptures. This combination developed after seeing a beach stone encircled by the roots of a tree on the eroded shore of a nearby island. This organic theme of enclosure, holding and embracing pervades many of my sculpture pieces. Stone carving followed the wood and beach stone sculptures. The stone carving continued the theme of placing combinations of beach stones and carved stones into the stone sculptures. I like smooth surfaces which invite touch and spend a lot of time polishing the surfaces with sandpaper and diamond tools. The wood is warm to the touch and the stone feels cool and glassy.
Sculptures by James Darley
Jim's sculptures are made from wood and stone found throughout the Maritimes: apple, plum, red pine, maple; alabaster, marble and slate. Finishes are tung oil and/or wax based. Note: all works are created for indoor installations, as these materials will not weather well outside.
