Eye Level Gallery Society is a non-profit, artist-run centre and registered charity mandated to present the work of regional, national and international contemporary artists since its establishment in 1974.
Eye Level Gallery Society evolved from Inventions Gallery, which was established in 1972 by a group of women artists. In 1974, when a fire caused a move to new premises, Inventions changed its name to Eye Level Gallery and opened its membership to include male artists.
As was the case with many other artist-run centres, from its beginnings the Gallery sought to offer an alternative to the mandates and practices of established art institutions. In addition to its visual arts program, Eye Level Gallery sponsored a variety of other cultural activities including music and dance performances.
This support lead to the development of two other artist-run organizations in Halifax , Live Art Dance and the Centre for Art Tapes. Aiming for greater member involvement, in 1986 Eye Level moved to a location in Halifax’s north-end, the neighborhood in which most of its artist-members lived.
With a strong and steady following, Eye Level returned to its former downtown site in 1993 and existed there until mid-2000. In September 2004, Eye Level Gallery moved to a new storefront location on 2128 Gottingen Street.
