In Northern Italy, food is still traditional. In a land where the climate is mild and the soil fertile, fresh cream, butter, herbs, meat and pasta are the main ingredients for the dishes of the region.
A meal in Italy usually starts with antipasti or soup, followed by pasta, then a main course of meat, fish or poultry, generally ending with a salad. The next course is usually a dessert, such as gelato, fresh fruit, or tortes. Wine is the natural accompaniment.
La Perla boasts authentic and delightfully prepared Northern Italian cuisine presented by Chef James MacDougall. James began cooking with his mother Pearl, later joined and worked in a family friend's hotel in Northern Italy, then headed to Maxims’ to learn the art of French cooking. James has worked in Northern Italy, at Maxims in Paris, and in Germany and welcomes you to La Perla's Dining Room, located in the elegant charm and history of Dartmouth's oldest commercial property.
The original Sterns brick building dates to the days of Joseph Howe who frequented the offices there in the mid 1800's.This historic building was built in 1785 with bricks that originally came from England as ballast on sailing ships. LaPerla overlooks Halifax Harbour and offers one of the most picturesque views of the downtown Halifax skyline. It is the perfect backdrop for a lunchtime meal with colleagues, a quiet candlelit dinner for two, or a private evening party for family and friends.
