The Hearing Test
While a referral isn't necessary, we do receive many referrals directly from local doctors as well as from patients themselves. Our clinic has modern equipment to thoroughly test your hearing and find out what kind of hearing loss you have and what the possible cause may be. The results of the test are explained in simple terms to each and every patient. If the results suggest the presence of some disease process, a referral for further medical testing and treatment will be made.
Hearing Aid Fitting
The hearing aid fitting is another appointment in which family members can be involved. This is often a good opportunity to review strategies that may help improve communication. It is during this time that the hearing aid is checked to ensure a comfortable and accurate fit and the settings of the hearing aid are evaluated using specialized computer equipment while the patient is wearing the hearing aid. Maintenance and cleaning of the hearing aid as well as the warranty information are also explained.
All new hearing aid fittings are given a 30-day trail period during which time follow-up appointments are made to determine if any changes or adjustments to the hearing aid(s) programming are necessary and to answer any questions the patient may have. It is important that each patient and his/her family be counseled on getting used to hearing aids, especially if the person is being fit for the first time. Furthermore, they must understand that an adjustment period is normal and to be expected. It is not uncommon to have several adjustments within the trial period. A successful fitting is more likely to occur if the hearing aid user and the audiologist have an ongoing professional relationship that entails proper counseling, regular hearing aid maintenance and cleaning, as well as monitoring hearing levels over time.
