Shakespeare by the Sea

Founded in 1994 by Patrick Christopher Carter and Elizabeth Murphy to provide accessible, affordable, professional theatre to all people this company has played to over 150,000 people since its inception. With a demographic of ages 18 to 45 making up over 75% of the audience Shakespeare by the Sea captures the interest and imagination of the major purchasing power of the province.

OUR MISSION IS CLEAR– Since 1994 Shakespeare by the Sea has been a vibrant and unique part of the Halifax theatre community. This professional non-profit theatre is committed to sharing the world of live theatre with everyone – without exception. With our by-donation performances we are most often the very first experience many adults and children have with live theatre and we believe that exposure to and interest in the arts make for better future citizens.

Each year we offer a two week workshop for young people. The first group is age 9 – 12 and the second group is age 13 – 17. These workshops are taught by our acting company and artistic directors.

Our stage is Point Pleasant Park. We are the only group offering live theatre in a natural setting. Who are we after? Everyone. Our pay-what-you-can admission means anyone can access and enjoy professional theatre. At the same time we attract visitors to the city, regular arts patrons and most important of all we make Halifax a better place to live.

Like most theatre companies we cannot be totally self-sustaining and we do rely on support from corporate and individual partners to help us. We have no debt and your sponsor dollars go directly toward supporting the 2006 season.

These are times of important change at Shakespeare by the Sea. A shadow of uncertainty followed in the wake of Patrick's sudden death. The partnership of Elizabeth and Jennie Raymond is proving a powerful team to ensure a sustainable future for the company. Although later than usual getting organized, we found support and encouragement from our many well wishers, seasoned actors and past cast members.

To ensure our future, we invite you to join our SBTS family through attendance at shows and sponsorship support. Our Management Team and Board of Directors views the summer as a Phoenix Rising and start the season excited about our prospects for the future.
