What's in a pocket? Nancy Humby saw great potential in a pocket.

Since 1994, Nancy has found a way, using denim pockets to support herself and her son, Mitch. After moving to a rural area, Nancy decided to enhance her entrepreneurial skills by taking a business course.

In the early stages, Nancy's business started out as a hobby. Quickly, the popularity of the recycled denim product helped her to recognize the potential for an income. Working as a legal secretary and also cleaning houses, she earned the money to buy used blue jeans. Through determination and hard work and with a life long passion for sewing and a knack for design she opened her home based business Fresh Start Denim Art.

By recycling denim, Nancy has created several designs, from denim bags, large and small, to decorative placemats, book covers, men's ties and quilts. Almost every FSDA creation sports a denim pocket.

FSDA has grown to employ four people and last year alone, recycled over 4000 pounds of denim blue jeans. Their designs have caught on so well, not only are they selling across Canada but they are also exporting to the United States.
