During the early to middle 1950s, many of Shelburne County’s one and two room schools became consolidated. As a result, in the Shelburne Town and Municipality three new elementary schools (Birchtown Consolidated, Sandy Point Consolidated, and Shelburne Elementary) were created. These schools were known as the feeder schools for Shelburne Regional High School.

Over time, as the three elementary schools aged, it was becoming more difficult to deliver an up-to date, comprehensive education. After many years of parental involvement, a new modern school, intended to house all the students from the three old schools, was built in 1992 on the east side of the town of Shelburne. The new school, named Hillcrest Academy, became the proud home of over 600 grade primary - six students and 60 staff. The enrolment increased so much in the first year that two additional classrooms had to be added to the south end of the school.

Today, Hillcrest Academy is a vibrant, well respected school of The Tri-County Regional School Board with an enrolment of 314 students and 45 staff. The school includes a large playground with a number of apparatus and swings as well as a full athletic field, gymnasium, cafeteria, library, art room, music room, French room, learning centre room, reading recovery room, leveled reading book room, sensory room, and program support room.

At Hillcrest Academy we want to work in cooperation with parents and the community to develop the whole student including the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and aesthetic potential of all students to the best of their abilities. We want students to become productive, responsible, and self-reliant members of society while leading personally rewarding lives in this changing world. Subsequently, we are working to develop and maintain in our students a joy and love of learning that will motivate them to want to learn, and to take pride in their accomplishments, their school and their community.
